Separate higher demand from lower production
Compare electricity usage and solar production over comparable periods. Tell the installer about an EV, added living space, new equipment, or a change in occupancy. If the system has alerts or a sudden production loss, ask about diagnosis before buying more panels.
Adding generating capacity is not a repair for an unresolved fault. A proposal should explain whether it addresses a new energy goal, an equipment problem, or both through separately defined work.
Compare the realistic options
| Option | Useful review question |
|---|---|
| Keep and repair | Is a specific fault preventing the existing system from doing its job? |
| Add generating capacity | Can a supported expansion fit the site and equipment arrangement? |
| Replace selected equipment | What problem does the replacement solve, and what remains? |
| Replace the system | What evidence and project goal support the larger scope? |
| Add storage | Is the main goal backup or later energy use rather than more generation? |
Ask what changes beyond the panel count
The review should address equipment compatibility, available installation area, mounting, electrical work, and any applicable updates to project documents or approvals. Existing agreements and product requirements should be considered before an expansion is promised.
Do not assume new panels can be mixed into any existing arrangement or that replacement of every component is always necessary. Ask for the actual reason behind the recommendation and the alternatives considered.
Request an option with a defined purpose
Send original plans if available, current equipment models, usage and production records, and your updated goal. Ask for the necessary work and optional improvements to be distinguishable in the proposal.
The Department of Energy encourages considering the value of a functioning existing system when evaluating replacement. For your property, Sun Ray can review a project-specific expansion or new-system scope. A condition assessment and clear price comparison should guide the decision rather than equipment age alone.
