Start with the roof’s condition and history

Gather the roof’s approximate age, material, known repairs, and any current leak concerns. If replacement may be needed soon, discuss that with a qualified roofing contractor before treating a new solar installation as a standalone project.

Provide the roofer’s findings to the solar installer. The Department of Energy identifies roof age, condition-related replacement planning, and shading as useful considerations before going solar. No single roof-age cutoff establishes suitability for every property.

Identify usable space and planned changes

Share existing roof plans or safe exterior photos showing the roof shape, trees, vents, and other features. Tell the installer about planned skylights, additions, or equipment that is not visible in current photos.

A large roof is not the same as a large usable array area. The proposed layout needs to account for the actual roof and project requirements. Avoid assuming that a panel-count estimate from an online image is a final design.

QuestionResponsible conversation
Does the roof need repair or replacement?Review roof condition and proposed work with the roofer.
Is the roofing material compatible?Review the selected mounting approach and product requirements.
What changes are planned?Give both contractors the same current drawings.
Who covers which workmanship?Keep roof and solar agreements and claim contacts clear.
When can installation proceed?Agree on the roof-ready conditions and solar appointment.

Put roof preparation in the budget

Ask whether any necessary roof work is part of a separate roofing agreement. A new-solar quote should state its own preparation assumptions rather than leaving you to discover additional roof needs after equipment is ordered.

If you already have solar and need reroofing, use the removal-and-reinstallation service instead of treating the work as a new installation. For a new system, send your roof information, electricity usage, and project goals to Sun Ray for a project-specific review.
