What animal activity can do
The NREL-led maintenance guide identifies squirrels chewing wire insulation and recommends restricting access and repairing damage. It also addresses nests around arrays and electrical boxes. See the wiring guidance.
A critter guard is a perimeter barrier, not an electrical repair. If the app shows an error or part of the array has stopped producing, ask for inspection before the perimeter is closed. Do not touch damaged wires or reach beneath panels.
Separate the known price from the unknown repair
Sun Ray Solutions’ on-site diagnostic assessment starts with a $200 nonrefundable service deposit. It is credited toward approved repairs and retained if repairs are declined. It does not include unlimited repairs.
| Cost item | How to budget it |
|---|---|
| Initial assessment | $200 service deposit; credited toward approved repairs. |
| Damaged wiring or equipment | Quote after inspection; parts, labor, and extent of damage vary. |
| Panel access, lifting, or reinstallation | Confirm whether this is needed and included in the repair total. |
| Animal removal and debris cleanup | Confirm the appropriate provider and a separate scope if needed. |
| Critter guard installation | $5–$9 per linear foot of confirmed perimeter. |
| Lost generation | Calculate separately; this is electricity value, not a contractor charge. |
Example: if the approved repair total is $900 including the assessment credit, the remaining repair balance after the $200 deposit is $700. The $900 is an arithmetic example only, not a Sun Ray repair rate or a local average. Do not count the deposit twice.
Calculate the electricity lost while you wait
Lost electricity value = affected daily generation × days affected × value per kWh. Use only the part of the system affected. Do not assume one chewed lead shuts down every panel.
| Affected generation | Time affected | Electricity value lost |
|---|---|---|
| 15 kWh/day | 14 days | $31.50 |
| 30 kWh/day | 14 days | $63.00 |
| 30 kWh/day | 30 days | $135.00 |
These examples assume all of that power would replace purchased electricity at $0.15/kWh. If some would be exported, use the applicable export credit for that share. Your actual generation, duration, and plan may differ.
Compare protection with your actual exposure
For 100 linear feet, the published guard price is $500–$900. Compare that with a defined protection scope, evidence of animal access, and the cost of any existing damage. Without a credible probability of future damage, a guaranteed dollar amount “saved by critter guard” would be misleading.
Include separate roof sections and gaps in the scope. Confirm that the chosen material and attachment preserve ventilation, drainage, and required service access. See the perimeter pricing guide.
